Superior is one's own duty, imperfect, over another's duty, done well.
In one's own duty, death is superior to another's fear-fraught duty.
One's own duty, performed imperfectly, is superior to another's duty, [even] done well. Death in the course of one's own duty is superior to another's duty fraught [only with] fear.

One's inferior natural work is better than superior unnatural work. Death in carrying out one's natural work is useful. Unnatural work produces too much stress. (See also 18.47)
It is far better to discharge one's prescribed duties, even though they may be faultily, than another's duties. Destruction in the course of performing one's own duty is better than engaging in another's duties, for to follow another's path is dangerous.
